Collecting
is akin to contracting a fantastic disease, an incurable one.
Our May/June auction is headed by property from a gentleman
who has this collecting bug and has inspired the title of this
auction.
Dr. Sture V. Sigfred of Norfolk, Virginia, has an eye for sculptural
line. Simplicity of design and material combine with an architectural
and industrial aesthetic in the objects of his early to mid-20th
century collection. In looking at the Kuba "Komet"
television console, the "Captain Fantastic" pinball
machine, the Texaco Fire Chief Gas pump, and the Chase cocktail
sets, one is moved by the form of the objects. Furniture designed
by Gilbert Rohde, Donald Deskey, and L. Mies van der Rohe all
vie for one’s attention. A large group of material from
the SS United States Line from linen to furniture and Chinese
porcelain and furniture complete this select group of property.
Complementing the Sigfred Collection, a North Carolina Private
Collection from Charlotte brings Paul Frankl and George Nelson
designs to the auction. An important D. Chiparus bronze figural
group, a Deco-inspired Japanese silver tea and coffee service,
a Victor Vasarely weaving, three important I. Rice Pereira abstract
paintings, and a dining room suite in the manner of Ray Hille complete the selection of 20th century property.
American furniture and tall case clocks from the Collection
of Robert S. McClure of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a large selection
of silver from Spring Creek Plantation in Holly Springs, Mississippi,
historical documents and early glass from a Williamsburg, Virginia
Collection, Old Master and 19th Century European paintings from
the Collection of Elizabeth Wozniak of Roswell, Georgia, and
American Primitive and Garden-related material from a North
Carolina Private Collection round out our "Centuries of
Style" auction of over 800 lots.
We hope that you enjoy our May/June offering. It is a bit different
from our normally traditional fare, but I think that you will
agree there are some fantastic and fun objects in this one!
