Good Stuff Sells!
We have some wonderful “stuff” in this sale, with some great re-offered items at drastically reduced prices. Other items will be featured from various Southern Estates and Private Collections. The sale highlight is a Thomas Brooks painted and carved tobacconist figure of an Indian Princess, late 19thC.
From a Southern Museum, comes a terrific group of African Art. The objects focus on sculptural form and offer a great chance for new collectors to purchase some authentic pieces at modest prices. Of particular interest are a small Bakongo figure and many fabulous masks.
From a South Carolina Private Collection, comes a nice selection of oriental rugs and carpets, and some great paintings, including a portrait of Frederick III by Franz-Seraph von Lenbach, also an untouched oil on canvas by Arthur F. Tait, dated 1888, in its original frame. In addition to these two paintings we have a great selection of British portraits and a group of early 20th C. California paintings.
My favorite “stuff” comes from the Estate of Elizabeth C. Cramer of Palm Beach, FL, and by descent from the Collection of George Holden Tinkham, the legendary Boston Congressman. The Collection includes an eclectic assortment of Asian, French, and Continental furniture and decorative arts including 15 Dorothy Doughty porcelain figure groups, Lalique, porcelain, and ceramics. My favorite items in this collection are the majolica center bowl with putti figures and the 13th – 15thC Chinese carved figure of a seated Quan Yin from the Tinkham Collection in Boston.
General Ernest Beverly was an Air Force flying ace during World War II and spent many years in Japan and the Philippines following the war as Director of Operations Pacific Air Forces. He and his wife collected Japanese prints and a wide range of decorative arts from porcelain, ceramics, and metal-work. Their collection also includes a number of significant 19th C. Japanese wall screens.
In addition to the items already mentioned, we have some nice American, English, and Continental furniture and decorations, great silver, including a set of Reed & Barton Francis I flatware and a monumental Francis I oval tray, a wonderful melon-formed George III tea and coffee service, and a great Art Nouveau footed vase, nice books from the Estate of Elise C. Williamson of Biltmore Forest, NC, two volumes John Boydell, Shakespeare’s Engravings, Anson’s Voyages Atlas (1748); and from the Estate of Rose Anne Hadaway of Atlanta, GA, and a monumental Meissen table clock modeled by Helmig and made by Meissen specifically for display at the Paris World Exposition in 1900. Also, look for the Albert Bierdstadt chromolithograph, “The Rocky Mountains Landers Peak”, by Thomas McLean, 1869- wow!
