Important American presentation pipe tomahawk, late 18thC

Finely crafted inlaid steel head, with open pipe bowl with band of brass inlaid stars over a repeating silver band, with a repeating brass inlaid band on bowl taper. The main body of the head with conform inlaid banding extending both sides of top and bottom, surrounding the inlaid center with flowerheads and vines in silver and brass, seated on a 24" maple shaft bearing the silver engraved plaque "Given to Absalom Baird, Surgeon to Col. Baldwin's Reg't by Indian Chief 1780". Dr. Absalom Baird was born in Chester County PA in 1758; he enlisted in Dr. Gardiner Scott's company of volunteers and made ensign, soon afterwards being appointed assistant surgeon in a Pennsylvania regiment. He treated the head wound of General Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Stoney Point, NY in 1779 and in 1780 was appointed surgeon of Col. Jeduthan Baldwin's regiment until the end of the war. He moved to Washington PA in November 1786 and lived on Maiden Street in that town, where he served as one of the first doctors in the area and was active in local politics and civil affairs, holding numerous offices of government. He died in October 1805 as a consequence of a fall from his horse. Accompanying the tomahawk are a collection of handwritten letters and printed documents including: 12 handwritten letters from his mother Catherine McClean, nine from Sept. 11, 1779 to Fishkills NY to Oct. 1, 1781 during the war years and three from 1787 regarding conditions/news about Kennett; 2 letters to Miss Jane Canon from Marines sergeant William Canon May-Sept. 1801, from aboard U.S. Frigate President at Hampton Roads near Norfolk VA then sailing to Straits of Gibraltar; a handwritten certificate about a stolen Continental horse; 8 letters from various people about family and conditions in PA following the war; 3 letters sent to Col. Baldwin's regiment near headquarters 1780 regarding war conditions; a handwritten indenture of Dec. 5, 1796 between Dr. A. Baird and Abner Leacock of Big Beaver Creek; a 2-page circular/petition "Act to provide for the defense of the frontiers of the Commonwealth, Washington PA, Jan. 7, 1803"; a printed court document of U.S. Court of Claims, Thomas H. Baird vs. the U.S. regarding claims due Dr. A. Baird for services during the Revolution; and a 53-page typed biography of Dr. Absalom Baird written by Thomas Patterson, Esq., Pittsburgh PA.

Condition:
loss of inlay on 2 stars in pipe bowl and to some vine area on both sides, also to some of banding, otherwise in very good overall condition
