When I was thirteen my family moved from New Jersey to New Hampshire, where I became submerged into new surroundings. Slowly, I went from being the other, to becoming a New Englander. As I grew accustomed to the New England culture, I found myself constantly anthropomorphizing subtle differences within the people, places, and landscape that the residents cling to. The connection to the land is intensely built into the New Hampshire spirit and history of the state. New Hampshire is unique in that the majority of its residents commute several hours a day to work in the city, only to come home to their home in nature. In the tradition of large format documentary photography, I am attempting to find what it means to document a place through objects, people, and photographs.
Shane Godfrey grew up in New Jersey and moved to New Hampshire in his early teens. He went on to study photography in high school and attended The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University until 2009 where he obtained his BFA and graduated with honors. While at AIB, he interned at the Polaroid 20x24 studio in New York City and participated in several student exhibitions. Shane also contributes to the Big Red and Shiny publication as well as writing on his blog about art, photography, and anything else that sparks his interest. After graduating he started his own commercial photography business to fund his fine-art projects and continues to live and work in Boston Massachusetts.
