I fell in love with Sicily the moment we stepped off the plane. The violent volcanic topography, the impossible heat and sun, and the spectacular beauty of the Mediterranean combine to create a landscape like nothing I have ever seen.

These photographs, like most of my work, are the result of a strong formal curiosity combined with my love of exploration. I can't count how many miles I walked over the course of this trip, but the thick layer of dust permanently embedded in my sneakers suggests that it was quite a few.

Dalton Rooney is a photographer from Brooklyn, New York, with roots in southern California. His work has been shown in galleries around the country and was recently featured in the Collector's Guide to Emerging Photography, published by the Humble Arts Foundation.
